This is the dilemna; I'm a non-smoker, but the daughter smokes and the odor gets into my place, and I smell the constant stink of cigarette smoke, and it really bothers me even though I've tried to cover it up with incense.

Mitch, the carpet idea makes sense. i was thinking about that, but we tell them that we dont want people to walk on the carpet, that's why it's not changed. we tell them about it, just like that, that we dont want people to mess it up, and they nod in agreement and say "it makes sense"..it looks good, just has odor to it. maybe i can just change it and put plastic where people can walk on it.there's no space for a dishwasher.. it's not a large kitchen, not much of an option, in my opinion. maybe that's a drawback (but can't be the reason with the singles)here's the link, take a look at the pictures - http://onpointrentals.com/index.php?

It could also be insufficient draft, but this is usually accompanied by the odor in the room when combustion occurs which you didnt mention, and with a three story flue isnt likely. The cleaning and thermocouple replacement is simple.

Those carpets and pads must be pulled and the odors removed before new pads and carpets go in.And no Virginia, pet deposits will not take care of this, they can contribute but these people should talk first before the landlord does his checkout and try to come to some agreement to ease his pain and in turn theirs.Talk first, do not make them chase you or any chances of a reasonable settlement go out the window, or they would for me.
