It's as if somehow the drum motor has bypassed everything but the door safety switch and just comes on whenever the unit is plugged in.  

My previous secretary manages our "production" lines, aggregate production, motor shop, and supply chain, then she graduated to 3 projects (20-30 people per project) doing it only by phone and bi-weekly reports and one foreman meeting each week, but those are more easy, just doing roads and small structures like drains and ditches.

Now this fella makes good money, has a union job at General Motors, been there for a good long time...  

I hear there is a lot to repair and Flip in the Motor City.  

R22 has gotten so damn expensive with the phaseout I don't repair those systems anymore beyond something simple like a capacitor or fan motor. 

They looked like someone poured motor oil on them in places.

My suggestion is to get a boiler service guy (probably a smaller company)  out and get an estimate of what it will cost to repair the boiler so she has heat.. you don't need it working like new just want it to heat..Then you can make more decisions...OK My knowledge on boilers is not great but basically you have a oil or gas burner, a pump and pump motor,  piping and zone valves, and pressure gauge.... so, thermostat calls for heat then boiler fires up and tries to heat water .... then temp of water high enough to heat with.... then pump kicks on to circulate water to and from boiler...
