I am in my mid 20s and have saved up around 200 - 300k and currently reside in Brooklyn. 

You just need to stop looking in major metro areas.Like @Leslie Anne Morris and @Brooklyn McCarty said, vacation markets are the best areas.

It is landlord-friendly, and specific pockets have gone upwards of 2-4x in the last 5-10 years.To be even more specific areas I would focus on are the westside of Cleveland (Cudell, Old Brooklyn, West Boulevard, Jefferson, Clark Fulton).
