I replied "oh, I was just joking, sorry for the misunderstanding".I could tell the guy was a little unbalanced but receiving threatening calls afterwards to kill me was  little unnerving.

At first I read some posts on him and the company before I went ahead with him and thought to give him a chance and maybe there were some misunderstandings with others who had bad experiences with him.

The article of agreement should be fine just make sure you record it at the Court House and it contains all the relevant details so that if there are any misunderstandings you can fall back on that document.
