You can choose from the options of wood and cast iron that are the most favourite options in the market.

The current heating system is natural gas with old cast iron hydronic radiators.

Tim,  Its ironic that you posted this.  

My home is currently a literal construction site and my fenced in back yard is full of debris, rusty nails, ladders left propped up against the walls and my patio furniture and BBQ grill thrown about as if they were trash.

Be patient, analyze some deals while you save up money, and strike when the iron is hot. 

They also come with plumbing (galvanized, cast iron) which is near the end of its life and electrical added in the 20s/30s which started life as knob-and-tube and was "extended" over time.  

When the market crashes, and there are buying opportunities everywhere, that ironically is when people say the sky is falling and all leverage is bad, and that is when you want to leverage up most (but still sensibly) IMO to take advantage if you want to grow your portfolio.

That is why there are so many strong laws in many places preventing development, and making it vey difficult to raise rents (ironically this actually exacerbates the problem).
