Your reputation will build independently online and people will want to work with you no matter what named company you associate with.   

My experience, independent agents write cheaper better auto polices, direct writers/ captive agents, cheaper better fire insurance.

Don't forget the utilize the 70% percent rule and to subtract your rehab costs to determine your purchase price.Using independent wholesalers may give you the opportunity to find better priced deals, but you'll have to do much more leg work to qualify the leads as these groups will not hold your hand as much as the aforementioned.

I would go with an independent agent who can shop the market as opposed to a captive agent.  

You can purchase with anyone else as long as you are taking title yourself to that much real estate.Your soon to  be ex may also exchange his portion independently. 

Obviously, we track each property independently, but track cash flow out of one account.
