It would be a fantastic place for a STR. 

I can go to Mexico (Yucatan) and spend less than $200/day and have an amazing time, in awesome hotels, eating fantastic authentic food, drinking until I'm wasted and going on multiple excursions. 

But mainly the HOA aspect because with a condo you do let go of certain controls when the HOA is in charge, like a condo.

Some people like to be hands on as owners and be control freaks.
