Ask the neighbors to keep an eye on the property and call you if they see anything suspicious.

Also an item to be very suspicious of right now: "Preferred Equity" Really, I think preferred equity is not represented accurately (it is not "safe" or protected really in any form) by many syndicators, and I own no second position debt or preferred equity personally.

They can be extra eyes on the property and report any suspicious activity. 

I became suspicious, but we agreed to borrow half the amount.

To me, this sounds suspiciously like a work around with lower entity costs.
