In fact I am managing $500k project now where I am bidding out materials purchasing through the supply house.If you, the customer.... purchase the material, pick it up, load and unload it, make it safe in your project house, deal with any shortages, overages or returns, take on all warranty issues, etc, etc, then I suppose you could justify not paying the GC any markup.

The good news is that in cities like Berkeley with aggressive rent control, there is always a shortage of available rental units (the rent board bureacrats constantly find ways to perpetuate the housing shortage upon which their jobs depend).
