However in many situations you will have a 'waterfall' distribution setup where the deal has to hit certain return thresholds before the general partner gets his portion of the leg work.

That 6% is called a preferred return and the 50% is a waterfall.

I don’t believe most pref language calls this out in waterfall so wondering what is standard.
