You want your attic to pull fresh air from outside (low part of roof) and vent out along the top (either gable vents, or ridge vents or 'turtle' vents).

If you don't really know anything about construction,I'd suggest you begin my learning each element or part of a house, from the vapor barrier at the foundation to the ridge of the roof.

This would be over a 25'x26' area encompassing both sides of the ridge line.
