I would expect any one that is holding themselves out to prepare tax returns to have continuing education and a knowledge in the area I am hiring them in.You definitely need someone qualified, does not have to be a CPA, could be an Enrolled Agent or an attorney.

I am a real estate agent and enrolled agent and have worked with Thomas Lynch from both aspects.

I second @Dave Toelkes , as an enrolled agent I sometimes have to deal with the tax impacts of transactions such as these.  

I’d considering blowing up the 401k right now, get a loan on it and/or take a hardship withdrawal (I had to re-enroll in school in another master’s program to do it).

Not sure if you know that @Michael Plaks: is an Enrolled Agent which means he is authorized to represent you in tax court and that is a step or two higher than the tax attorneys I know. 

I would take your return to an local/competent CPA/enrolled agent.

The girl enrolls for additional education in a field that pays better than the usual "woman job."

Make sure you are enrolled in a degree that has market demand - which sounds like you have - and good financial prospects, which also sounds like your degree.

I wonder if there is any way to know the answers to all these questions unless you actually enrolled in each one.
