My optimal time to try to schedule it is in the transition in the spring or fall when no one is thinking about their HVAC systems because the weather is nice and the temperatures are moderate.It is not unusual to see the price be 50% less if you aren't having to get someone out on an emergency basis to replace that 10 year old compressor.As for roofs, I'd still plan for those too.
