The installation has to meet inspection standards.In order to have an apartment in a house in Boston, it either has to be a legal 2 family by certificate of occupancy, or has to have a permit for the accessory apartment.To get a permit for a basement apartment in Boston, it has to pass fire codes, have a minimum ceiling height 6' 8", and have two means of egress, which could be a separate outside entry door to the basement or windows large enough to accommodate a person.

Recently, Raleigh has noticed accessory dwelling units AKA ADUs as a good idea to encourage to help with the affordability crisis.Raleigh now has approved plans for fast track ADU builds that can be purchased online which helps investors speed up the process in the permitting side of development.But recently, Raleigh is noticing, not as much traction as they would hope so they just put out a workshop to help the city figure out how to encourage more homeowners and investors into Building accessory dwelling units.

The home was originally a single family build, but since we had more family coming from overseas my parents built an upstairs accessory apartment 30+ years ago (with legal building permits) to accommodate all of our family.Both units have separate entrances, separate electric meters, full kitchen/bathroom, and 3 bedrooms each.
