I think I've picked up some decent information and tips here and there, but it would be nice to have a more efficient way of going about this that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

As an STR/MTR host and co-host in the Atlanta Metro Area, I’d echo Collin’s zoning tip—mixed-use areas like Ohio City or Tremont, as Arman suggested, are prime for STRs due to tourist draw and flexibility.
