Have been to Houston in 2013 and from my memory it gave me a similar profiling to Perth, WA very resource centric (mining, oil&gas) next to energy rich region and liked that the city was big yet not maddening as the NY/LA's of the world.

Bringing in 77063 is not even a comparisons, if folks think proximity to Piney Point means anything it only does if you're zoned to Memorial High School or can get in the bus route for Kinkaid. 77063 cannot and does not. 

The memory of the 2008 housing crisis still lingers, but I don't foresee a repeat of that situation.

Whatever direction I go, I would leave my current job and take a few years to learn the craft and business under someone else before breaking off on my own. 

I might suggest renting a car, if my memory serves me correct they are all 1-2hrs outside of Cancun.
