Is there one area that is typically viewed as the best option for house hacking? 

Thanks for adding additional points of view to this. :-)  Usually the beneficiary interest is transferred vs selling to end buyer.I still do not like this method - but with the DOS issue, it may be a necessity.

You are exactly right, the houses that stand out (wetland view, kids game room..) have already more reviews on Vrbo in this subdivision.

Generally, here's the rule I follow with stuff like this: If every house on the block has a garage and you remove it from your house, that's an expected facet of the home that is lost and you will objectively lose value when comparing to another house from a "market value" perspective; especially from an appraiser's point of view. 

WE are venturing in the Philippines with a view towards retirement - having properties that will pay for itself, a place to stay when we come to the US and buy & Hold for our future retirement or our kids in the future.
