If it's walking distance from the beach it would probably be suited for retired snowbirds or remote workers.

I think it makes sense to real estate inside and outside of retirement accounts.  

There are other means to gaining some extra cash too, pulling from retirement funds, personal loans, borrowing from friends, etc. 

I started investing in real estate in July of last year and now have 3 rental properties. 1 in Alabama purchased through REI Nation and 2 in Port Charlotte Florida purchased through Rent to Retirement.

I can tell you what people here have done to set themselves up for retirement.

The price of rent is usually more than a mortgage and come retirement, rents are going to be higher and chances are your income will go down.Sharing a house (ensuring contracts are drawn up) is a great way to get into the market.
