If the new beam is a LVL beam, it is as strong as or stronger even at 6 inches height than two 2x8s sandwiched together, but I would still get a structural engineer's opinion it.

I think it may be difficult, finding someone willing to do it, and finding them in time before someone else buys it, but if you can swing it (I've heard it referred to as a sandwich lease) it might be the cleanest.
