If you're not asking your family because you're worried about your relationship if things don't go well your relationship will be strained you're trading positive vibes for a potential prison term.

For example, one of my AirBnB units is in a complex thats going through some cosmetic renovations on the outside, and we had to go in and replace windows to double pane (eep!).

And fund-raising is a strain.

Maybe a good lesson to learn not to borrow from family (it can work, but it also can strain relationships).

Unless you have the deal of a lifetime I would not strain yourself.  

If you're paying the heating bill and the windows are original single-pane 1975 windows...well...you can figure that one out...In most cases (and I have no clue where this property is...and have less knowledge of Mississippi) you won't see $500/month rent in "B" areas.  

I don't know who may or may not be interested in renting from you, but I would not advise renting to friends or family as it can cause strain in the relationship if they don't pay or if they are upset with how the property is being managed.

@Courtney Hebert I can't predict what will happen exactly but in the last crash in '06/'07, many HELOCs were called due and closed, which would potentially put a lot of financial strain on you. 

And it saves on electricity since I don't have to have the lights on when not needed.The setup for connecting the lock to the panel is pretty straight forward.
