There are plenty of areas that make sense in the Chicago land areas for single family rentals, but they typically are not located close to the city, in the top school districts, etc. 

@Donna Lowe   Start with your local tax office or county appraisal district. 

Look for a place in the better school districts too.

This unit is in the hotel zoning district and can be leased short term.  

Is the school district good?

Everyone who was paying attention knew the TIF would run out in 2018, and the municipalities plus the school district would see a large jump in their budgets when they finally started receiving their full share of the property taxes from the Waterfront.

Luckily for us, a sitting council member lives within our district, and exempted her corridor from the new regulations.  

House-hacking is a great choice, but usually with a higher buy-in in areas you'd want to live (Midtown and Medical District have a lot of these types of units).
