@David Fuhrmann, as I welder/fabricator I would recommend not having any hardie board or  wood around that stove.

What you did and continue to do is fabricate reality.

I second the use of Bounce fabric softener sheets and the ultrasonic repellant devices. 

I have gone through this before, and it is a delicate balance.

If I go with a gravel lot to start with, gravel roads require underlay fabric to stop the road bed from pushing into the soil and spreading out or disappearing over time.
