But since the walls did get painted and the shades were off, I could potentially see where you would be responsible for that. 

I would recommend you spend some time in the blue shaded areas, so you get a sense of what you are getting yourself into.

Apparently a smoker lung looks way darker and the tar is so thick In It that when you push on the tissue wIth your thumb, brown goo comes through the surface

Terrible to hear of the darker sides of people that manifested themselves when things got bad.

Those units usually just feel darker. 

Lowe's also has a wood look tile for that price but it is significantly darker in color.

I would spend a few hours painting the bathroom pale gray, paint the vanity darker gray and an inexpensive all chrome handle,  add some towels in turquoise or yellow and a shower curtain to match (but leave it open) or something.
