That horizontal crack at the top of the block could be a sill plate covered by the parging coat, that would be pretty much guaranteed to crack when the wood swells and contracts.

I'm a big believer that finishers should stay back until concrete has settle some, because that's their nature, to overwork the concrete (bleeding, segregation, etc.)Puerto Rico is tropical, very humid also, and you are right, materials are expensive, but PR have at least one big cement plant (Cemex and lime), but also bring other cement, fly ash, slag, and other pozzolans into the island.

I never thought about the beveled edges reducing chips but I did wonder about water as the bevels expose a hair of the core...but a little swelling there would not be as noticeable as on a square edge.
