Hi Ingrid, yes we did look up similar homes in the area and yes they do have pantries, we just weren't sure if it would increase the value to the property, but we updated the kitchen with granite counter tops and have painted the cabniets we invested in the kitchen close to $3k, only because the cabniets are in very good condition I just painted the cabniets and the kitchen walls and hired a pro for the granite $1500 for the slab and intallation, and we got gently used stainless steel appliances.

I don't think you are getting "bashed" I think you are being gently nutured by your elders.

So I would clean the walls gently and check for any peelings, then oil-based Kiltz primer/sealer, then a high quality latex top coat.

I feel like I can massage this a bit further; not ready to give up on it yet. 

Gently rock or jiggle the WH to get it drain centered and suitably aligned.

We picked up gently uses but nice furniture, generic art to hang, kitchenware, and pretty much anything a home would need to live in.

And even though this house isn't quire ready to sell, I'm on the lookout for another gentle fixer to roll into.
