A mid-term rental could be an great option during the 6-7 months you're away since it appeals to traveling professionals, remote workers, or individuals relocating and offers stable income without the constant turnover of short-term rentals.

Many property owners rented, and decided not to rebuild, but to sell their homes and use the money to invest, travel, etc., staying in rentals.

I worked with a travel nurse who does shift work and 5 lenders said that they couldn’t finance her primary residence purchase and I ended up making it happen for her.

The down side is that STRs are more work, need to furnish it, pay for utilities and WiFI but in the right market (vacationers and business travelers) it could work. - If I were looking at cash flow as a really important important metric, I'd consider starting a business.

That said, we have traveled a lot and stayed in wonderful Airbnbs over the years and have always dreamed of creating an incredible experience for someone visiting Minnesota with a short-term rental as well, so we are definitely open to that idea and have some great experience as to what we know would provide an exceptional short-term rental experience. 

If you're prospecting the entire coast, just keep in mind travel times for tours and be mindful of the weather.
