Choose what type of rent payment method you want the tenant to use (e.g. online portal, ACH, checks, etc.).

Have the tenant use ACH or Zelle for deposits. 

And expect cycling, there will be times to focus on lean and times to focus on putting on the muscle.

ACH payments by their nature take a few days to know if it actually clears (you can know faster for credit card payments). 7-10 days I'm guessing is something like this:2-3 business days Tenant -> Zillow2-3 business days Zillow -> LandlordSo in summary, you'd almost surely know within a couple days if the tenant sends a bogus payment, even if you don't get it into your bank account until later.

There are a lot of online solutions to help advertise, find and screen candidates, setup leases and ACH payments (i use Avail.co).

The best recent move I made was to set up all new borrowers on ACH; I initiate the ACH batch to collect monthly payments.

ACH payments made in DoorLoop on Monday can be in your bank account by Wednesday.

Over the years, only the last two tenants placed in two properties a few months ago have requested electronic payment, and that was when we were setting up business accounts and realized they want to charge for ACH, which I'm not doing.
