Good afternoon even though I am a very small landlord of only 4 homes/7 doors, I do deal with lots of family issues.Dave Ramsey always says, "you should rent for the first year of marriage to know how far from your in-laws you want to live".

Financing and tax related issues will force the other into becoming part of whatever you decide to do and you don't want to overcomplicate your marriage with financial decisions that both of you are not on board with wholeheartedly.That being said, there are other ways to invest in real estate that don't involve you moving or evening buying a home.

I got (very) lucky and realize I was fortunate; I also realize how easy it is to lose everything via marriage, people targeting you, etc., so you got to put yourself in situations where you're a rookie often and you realize you're working at a deficit.

I understand most would say I should double-down with my spouse on our business full time but 1) our industry is heavily regulated in a way that can really affect revenue so it's a priority for both of us to have another avenue of income-- if not cash flow now, then appreciation/equity. 2) my spouse and i work very differently so while we have made it work the last couple of years, it isn't conducive long term to a healthy marriage.
