In Amarillo where I was building previously they called this type of soil “Fat Clay” which was just a way to describe how the soil reacted when it got wet.

(the difference is, his sink doesn't leak, the old clay sewer pipe was replaced, so everything drains, he has insulated windows and new steel front door, and this year he got central heat and air.
