If there is a silver lining though it would be; if we had hired to have kitchen/bath gutted and remodeled it would of cost around $5-$7k or more according the estimates we received.

As you say, Mitch, it would be a short.Now, it is possible the hot wire it connected correctly but the neutral is connected to both the silver screw and to the green ground screw.

The only silver lining in all this is that you are more likely to get the appraisal for contract price because contract prices have declined compared to the last few months.

By reading this to me the answer is obvious, you should sell and invest the profits in Gold and Silver.
