Marcia Maynard What kind of rentals attract senior tenants?
15 October 2016 | 22 replies
Here is a summary of what I have gleaned:Building Attributes: one level, ground floor, elevator in multistory buildings, no steps, universal design, wider doorways, smooth floor coverings without throw rugs, chair height toilets, hand rails, grab bars, bathroom near bedroom, laundry in unit or close by, good lighting, less square footage to take care of but enough to comfortably move around and to entertain visitors, close to bus stops, close to medical facilities, close to activities that interest seniors, garden, front porches, backyard patios/decks, quiet, warm, safe.Landlord Attributes: respectful, attentive, face-to-face communication, willing to adjust speaking speed and volume as needed, willing to do things for tenants to keep them off ladders and step stools (change light bulbs, hang pictures, etc.), willing to adjust policies and procedures to accommodate needs (alternative ways to pay rent, use of telephone instead of texting, etc), genuine interest in seniors' wisdom and legacy, willing to check in on the safety and well being of residents, willing to assume responsibility for yard work, snow removal, and keeping outside pathways clear of debris, willing to help tenants connect with community services as the need arises (cleaning help, food prep programs, senior services, etc.), service oriented.
Reggie Smith Looking to start investing in the Pittsburgh area

Yes--the topography is tricky...but, that's a double-edged sword--it gives it great views, and gives the neighborhood character (some of the most expensive real estate on earth is on similarly rugged topography, with narrow PITA streets)... plus, it's so central, and so close to all the surrounding desirable neighborhoods, it just seems like it should have potential. ...but, I've been saying that for years, and I've apparently been mostly wrong about its potential...

Bea B. Bed Bug in a wallpaper? F***
10 August 2016 | 9 replies
it was a huge headache, but we were successful, and afterward, the house was spotless. in the house you're working on, i'd say, it wouldn't be difficult, since it's not full of personal items. but diatomaceous earth only works if the bugs make physical contact with it. we used ourselves as bait, sleeping on air mattresses in the center of the living room, but it was not ideal, especially with a baby. another thing to consider is that breathing it in can be harmful to your lungs and dries your skin out(it also dried out my rugs and floor a little, but, i wanted to cover all my bases). be sure to get the food grade stuff, wear masks when puffing it around, and only puff small amounts(we used a condiment bottle- for mustard or ketchup). another way to lure them through the de is with heat and carbon dioxide(because we generate heat and carbon dioxide)- you could use candles, but be careful leaving them unattended if you are not staying at home through this process. i wish you the best of luck. bed bugs are no fun.

What's happening here is bigger than the nationwide cycles that will certainly also occur, and a market correction nationwide will likely intensify what is happening in this area.In the years leading up to 2000, you didn't see this level of industry and foreign investment or development.

@Ned Carey Too many mainstream press articles about "income properties", a growth in the number of flip shows on television and, yes, folks who wouldn't know a stacked townhouse from a duplex talking about real estate .... it's why we haven't been buying much up here for the past 18 months.I would like someone to just pull the rug and get on with it .... we're ready :-)
