I could get an apartment but I think house hacking would be more worth while. any tips and insight as to get started quickly or should I rent an apartment for a year so I have more time to plan?

There is still a risk of things going sideways, but if this happens in a place where owner's rights are not well protected it would be worthwhile.

You have to reach incredible scale to obtain the efficiencies to make it financially worthwhile.

Edit: And taking 10-20% equity on a deal like this with an experienced investor might be completely worthwhile and life changing to be clear.
