You are correct that you will likely have to repaint them occasionally if you choose to paint them white now, but the place will look fresher in my opinion if you do.

If the damage is that bad, they should be replacing the dry wall in the ceiling; if it is a small stain it is an easy cover up with primer/spray paint and repainting it.
