Would could possibly do the laminate perpendicular to the wood to help make it look like two "styles", however I feel it will never look very good side by side.

Really appreciate it.This is a very narrow but deep lot so the units will actually be perpendicular to the front of the lot with a single drive down the side for garage access.

IMO your options are: 1) leave it and paint (I like the spray,spray, spray idea) 2) Strap it (1x4 screwed perpendicular to the framing) and new drywall, tape, texture?

As Brian mentioned - Joists above the wall running parallel to the wall being removed = non-structural, running perpendicular = likely (but not always) structural.
