It is critical to find a structure that works well for you.  

Using the proper terminology is critical especially if you start talking about “paying a rate of return” and such.

When you hit your point of critical mass institute your original strategy and pay those suckers off and enjoy retirement.  

I hope to be able to strike that same balance with my children that they hear the principles I'm teaching them but feel the freedom to choose their own path with feeling judgment or criticism from me whatsoever.

In my humble opinion cash on cash and multiple of invested capital (both net; NOT project level) should be mission critical to underwriting standards for the GP and LP.
