I understand the concept of "wholesaling," but I don't really know how to start.

A while back, I stumbled onto a thread where someone suggested using Dunn Edwards floating feather and a swiss coffee ceiling/trim combination.  

Sounds like you're on a solid path Edward.

There are some real advantages w/scale and a concept called forced appreciation (value add approaches) that make large apartment investing attractive.  

Since your renovation in this example was under $35,000 there is another loan (exclusive) that might have helped you and is less involved than a Homestyle or 203k...same concept though.  

Yes we all profit from paying down a mortgage and from appreciation at some point in the distant future but until you reach that point you still need to pay the bills.Two different animals, different concept, Investing verses speculation.
