it sounds to me like the contractor is a bit of a rip off artist.

Can't tell you how many fridge door handles & shelves have been broken/ ripped out, how many stove knobs, racks, scratches and dents I've tried to fix.  

We were absolutely devastated.Where we stand now: we immediately called Nationwide (our homeowners insurance) to file a claim, got a mitigation company to come out and they’ve basically ripped out the house down to studs on the first floor.

I regretted doing it & now the 'bath fitter' solution is the only viable option as I am NOT ripping out another bathroom.

It sounded like a complete rip off!

Ripping out a carpet is a real pain and then they have to pull out the staples and tack strips. 

Risks of getting ripped off by people who look for newbie such as yourself. 

if you have already started removing, seal the ripped up parts with guardz.

I posed a similar question elsewhere about moral hazard of flipping from afar where there is a bigger risk of being ripped off or just scammed outright.
