Maybe that math is a bit over your head but it is simple and actually you take usually 80% of the improvement and divided by x years (based on residential or commercial) to get the proper amount for the tax right offs and you still have so many more deductions, so let's not brush off that subject.

Other avenues to find contractors include: reviewing the neighborhood for signs of contractors already working in the neighborhoods that you are targeting, asking the town/borough for contractors that pull lots of permits (aka get hired a lot) in your area, as well as inquiring withe local Home Depot/Lowes early in the morning and seeing who is active.
