While properly maintained K-n-T can be perfectly safe - it is still prevalent in industrial settings and many power transmission lines are similar to K-n-T - the problem is that most residential K-n-T is 75+ years old and has not been well maintained - it's been spliced into and extended over the years ... quite often incorrectly.

I enjoy that you and your wife rent; in this market I think it's extremely smart as it frees up monies to invest, you guys are fluid to stop and stay for a while at one of your destinations, etc.

Better to keep your cash fluid then to buy into a bad or marginal deal and have debt you can't get rid of .Not only then are you getting little to no return but now you have debt that affects your ability to buy the great properties when they come along.If you wait all year and just buy 2 properties over 12 months but are winners that is better than accelerating to buy just to buy and you have 6 properties ( 2 losers, 2 marginal, and 2 that do well).
