But I know if I want kids and a future where I don't want to be behind a desk making magazines and logos my whole life, I need to take some sort of action. 

I am a New Yorker and considering going after a Real Estate License for a few reasons; to better my understanding of Real Estate and to save money on my own investments while also being able to make money from deals as an agent.

There are New Yorkers who are members....I'll PM you some more info on how you could meet them. 

Was the cover of an appraiser magazine covered with some appraiser who made it big as an investor or something? 

I am constantly checking out the for sale magazines that include a lot of the realtors listing around town, my browser home page(s) are pretty much Zillow.com/Realtor.com/Trulia.com or some other MLS. 

I am always looking for good resources both in print and online - including magazines, blogs, podcasts, video channels, etc.
