Thank you. you can reverse engineering the process , most of these note company are regional or even city wide only, so someone that's offering loan in Alaska would not been able to provide the same in state of Florida for example, so there should be a license that's allowing those company. 

Have you had many traveling staff employed in those regions?

If you are going to invest remotely, I suggest narrowing down the regions/markets you are would like to invest in, then take each step of due diligence to figure out what that market offers, any downsides to not being local, etc. 

This broadens your knowledge and gives you the chance to interact with like-minded people.Look for mentors with real estate investing experience in the Houston region.
