I literally didn't see the floor ANYWHERE in the entire building before I bought it, due to the clothes (many undoubtedly stolen, complete with the tags), trash, toys, dog feces, etc.

Damp towels or clothing can also cause it if left sitting for awhile, although I wouldn't think that would happen in the kitchen (but you never know with some tenants).
