I agree with Steven Picker it's likely a collection of hair and soap scum that has built up over time.

Remain on good terms show your landlord what you have done.Wash the kitchen cabinets with soap, lemon to eradicate the odor.

If you put a lamp on the floor and put about five or six pie tins around it with water in it then squirt some dish soap in it and turn the light on.

Makes total sense for too much soap and water residue is not good for the carpet and could attract dirt in the future.
