I had one $180,000 rental when turned over had most windows broken, roof shingles damaged, the tenant rebuilt his harley on the living room floor, cigarette burns on the bathtub edges, used,diapers crammed down all the vents, holes kicked in the walls and doors. 

I don't even want to put in new carpet or paint until something changes otherwise it will soak into the walls and carpet and our half will always smell like cigarettes.

I do my best to not judge the book by the cover, but if I've got two contractors with equal qualifications standing in front of me and one is wearing a wife beater, looks like he hasn't showered in two weeks and has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and the other has a collared shirt with a company logo and doesn't look like someone I'd cross the street to try to avoid, I'm going to try the guy that looks professional first. 

The whole place smells like cigarette smoke.

At the time they targeted Asian massage parlors, cigarette sellers, night clubs that had customers deemed criminal (read: minorities), medical marijuana clinics and (post 2008) bank owned properties that had been foreclosed. 

When I was younger and went to beer parties at crappy houses it was nothing to see people putting cigarettes out on the floor or people spilling stuff all over.
