Several websites you can go to on your own to help you decide if this is the area/property for you: Zillow for broad-stroke comps and what the sale/rental market looks like (how many rentals there are like yours and what they’re renting for), www.city-data.com for demographic data (like number of occupied rentals), and www.harriscountyfemt.org for flood plain data.

The only major issue is that you need to get your wife to accept the fact that people will be "getting freaky" in your bed and possibly all over the house...But if you are not going to put down roots you seriously need to set your "base" in a state without income tax.

Once they've accepted your offer, inspection and appraisal are part of the due diligence. however if they don't want to sell or want too much for it, it won't do you any good to have it inspected or appraised.
