Additionally my vendors of choice usually give me a discount that wouldn't be availabe to just any consumer. 

We didn't become consumer debt-free until we were househacking and had a rental portfolio. 

A lot of institutions that loan directly to consumers, such a banks, "direct lenders," or credit unions, are "Fannie only" or "Freddie only." 

So if you choose a style of investing that becomes overly time consuming, you aren't getting closer to your root goal, you are working yourself into another job.

A lot of times consumers have an experience that doesn't feel right to them and assume that the other party is lying or otherwise being shady when that isn't the case.

Off-grid and hybrid, though, you can still charge local batteries and self-consume, so there is certainly value in battery backup.
