I've seen some where the studs were literally collapsing into a powder from rot.The last one we did was an old 60's era cast iron tub that we had refinished several times (about $280/treatment) but it peeled.

my first thought would be to open up every window possible, idk if it will work but I'm pretty sure it will atlas help your situation...and google how to get smell out carpet maybe lowes or pet mart might have a special powder you could put down as well....i hope everything works out for you
