Our local inspector had no problem with aluminum wiring, but each area is different.The concern with aluminum wiring is that it oxidizes over time and can cause bad connections and heat...and then possibly fire.

Ozone is an oxidizer and an upper respiratory irritant.

So for many counties I've dealt with, a DIY perc test involves knowing the soils, soil colors, how to identify oxidation in soil, knowing the county soil survey description and how it applies.

The problem with aluminum is two fold 1) when the ends oxidize they will be more likely to overheat, melt and possibly burn 2) it expands and contracts more than copper which can lead to gaps at the connection again causing possible arcing, overheating and possibly a fire. 

I prefer Aluminum Oxide but Ceramic Bead works also.

Yes, wear layer is important but also the quality of the wear layer. 22mil vinyl vs something much thinner but with aluminum oxide or whatever makes it super hard.

The Low-E coating had failed and began to oxidize causing a metallic "cloudy" look which the buyer's asked to be replaced. 

Something with an aluminum oxide finish should hold up well I would think.
