Is there something better than just going to home depot?

It doesn't sound like you actually have an illegal unit here.... you have a two unit with a garden.

I called Home Depot, they told me to dispute the credit card charges so I did.  

They sell chemicals at the local Home Depot that gets that stuff off.

I usually have found most of my contractors at lowes or home depot in the early mornings.

So you don't need any flying ambers, at 1500F anything combustible will just spontaneously burst into flames.I was thinking about the people I have seen on social who tried to wet down their house with a garden hose.

Given that the difference in the two is often only $150 or so (just bought a new washer dryer pair for myself at Home Depot)...
