With a wooden fence you will have to treat the wood (stain or paint).

I am currently working on my first BRRRR and while walking through the rehab I accidentally stepped in paint then onto my hard wood floors. 

The wood harvested back then was much denser from older more mature trees.Plus they tend to be in the best part of town and are therefore more walkable, more restaurants, proximity to attractions/amenities, character, larger lots etc.

@Roy N. is correct, they are all over Europe.  

What does the wood look like under the aluminum?

(I'd also paint out the orange wood book case in wall and/or trim color .
